Start with what is already included
Before adding protection, note the coverage already in the offer, any excess and who is permitted to drive. Protection bought through a platform, protection sold by a supplier and a bank-card benefit may work differently. Read the terms applying to your booking: the same commercial name does not guarantee identical cover in two countries.
Reimbursement is not the same as removing the excess
Under a reimbursement arrangement, the rental company may charge you for damage and you then submit a claim with required documents to the protection provider. It does not automatically remove the deposit at collection. Conversely, a supplier’s excess reduction may change some terms without removing every exclusion. Ask about the deposit separately from damage protection.
Questions to ask before choosing
Check glass, tyres, roof, underbody, keys and assistance: they are not necessarily treated equally. Ask what happens on an unauthorised road, a ferry or with an undeclared driver. For card-based protection, contact the issuer with the country, vehicle category and duration. Do not assume every rental is eligible.
Prepare for a possible claim
Keep the accepted terms, inspection reports, photos and relevant invoices. If an incident occurs, follow the agreement’s procedure and the instructions of the relevant authorities; avoid an informal settlement that leaves you unable to document a claim. This guide explains general distinctions and is not a personal insurance-product recommendation. Confirm exact coverage with the relevant provider.
