When is a car useful?
Group visits by coast rather than repeatedly crossing the island. A first stop around Mahébourg calls for different planning from accommodation in Grand Baie or Flic-en-Flac. Check hotel parking access and your selected transmission. After a long flight, gradual familiarisation with left-hand driving is better than an overambitious sightseeing day.
Collecting your car at MRU Airport
Check airport code MRU, your flight terminal, the exact collection address and whether a shuttle is involved. Keep the supplier’s phone number and late-flight procedure. For return, allow for the fuel requirement, vehicle inspection and journey to the terminal; the desk is not necessarily next to your departure gate.
Choose your car and understand the costs
Compare boot space, transmission and equipment you actually need. Read payment-card, deposit and excess conditions separately. Add mandatory charges and chosen extras to the cost, but not a deposit that is only temporarily held. A particular model is guaranteed only if the contract explicitly confirms it.
The detail not to miss
For outlying beaches and villages, check the access road and contract exclusions before leaving paved roads. Compare actual driving times rather than map distances alone. On return day, allow time for the contract's fuel requirement, the vehicle inspection and any transfer to the terminal.
Questions before you book
Is the security deposit included in the price?
The security deposit is separate from the rental cost and may hold funds on a card. Check the amount, accepted card type and cardholder name in your chosen offer’s conditions. Extra coverage does not automatically remove the deposit requirement.
Can I return the car to another office on the island?
Only if your offer accepts that pickup and return combination. Put the exact return office on the booking and check its opening hours and any one-way fee. Returning on another island or taking the car on a ferry is a separate request requiring the supplier’s approval; it is not included simply because the islands belong to the same country.

Check before you buy
- Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked by your carrier.
- Check the covered countries, included data, validity period and when the plan starts. Coverage and speed depend on the network and location.
- Do not assume that standard calls and SMS are included. Download maps and tickets for offline use too; buying an eSIM is separate from renting a car.
