When is a car useful?
Our suggestion is to keep separate days for Funchal, the north-west around Porto Moniz and the east towards Santana. Do not automatically follow a GPS shortcut: the tourism board warns about steep, impractical local routes. Check parking and access before hiking; reaching a car park does not guarantee that the trail is open.
Collecting your car at FNC Airport
Check airport code FNC, your flight terminal, the exact collection address and whether a shuttle is involved. Keep the supplier’s phone number and late-flight procedure. For return, allow for the fuel requirement, vehicle inspection and journey to the terminal; the desk is not necessarily next to your departure gate.
Choose your car and understand the costs
In Madeira, start with a transmission you are comfortable using and a car size suited to your passengers, luggage and accommodation’s parking. An automatic can be a comfort preference, not a requirement. At collection, ask how to select suitable gears for descents in the car provided. Compare rental price, extras, excess and deposit separately: an SUV label does not guarantee a particular drivetrain or permission to drive off-road.
The detail not to miss
The local issue is Madeira’s narrow, steep roads. Visit Madeira recommends staying on main roads if GPS proposes an awkward shortcut and using an appropriate gear downhill rather than relying only on the brakes. Read parking signs: white spaces marked “M” are reserved for residents. Ask your accommodation where to park and check the planned access routes before leaving.

Is the security deposit included in the price?
The security deposit is separate from the rental cost and may hold funds on a card. Check the amount, accepted card type and cardholder name in your chosen offer’s conditions. Extra coverage does not automatically remove the deposit requirement.
Do I need a rental car for my whole stay in Madeira?
Not necessarily. Visit Madeira also lists public transport, taxis and organised tours. For days spent mainly in Funchal, compare these options with parking costs. You can consider renting only for excursion days, after checking the collection location, opening hours and pricing conditions. The choice depends on your accommodation and plans, not a general requirement.
